Asturias is a part of the so-called Green Spain, featuring many rural villages, green landscapes, friendly people and tasty food. It is one of the best regions in Spain to visit with the family and be away from the mainstream; perfect for cycling, relaxing, hiking or swimming ... many outdoor activities for the family! The coast offers a beautiful and jagged coastline with impressive cliffs and quaint coves, the inland is very rich in cultural traditions, with vibrant historical towns, Pre- Romanesque monuments and welcoming accommodations. This short escape will show you one of the well-known Natural areas in Asturias, where two resident European brown bears are taken care of.
Arrival in the last village of the valley of Teverga, on the limit between Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Natural Park and Somiedo. Accommodation at a charming hotel near San martín. If you arrive early, you can visit the Romanesque Collegiate Church of San Pedro de Teverga (11th century). Particularly interesting are the completely renovated cloisters and the “Mummies of Teverga”.
Today we are heading to the Valley of Somiedo, where Spain’s largest European brown bear population is located, protected against poachers and curious tourists.
Today in the morning you will hike with an official guide specialized in nature that will show you the way of life of the bears and the curiosities of the Cantabrian ecosystems where they live. Maybe you will get to see some track or hair. The guided tour is in English. The transfer to the beginning of the route is not included but the guide will manage the taxi that must be paid by the client directly to the taxi driver.
If you did not spot any brown bear yesterday, today you have the chance to see them in captivity on the sides of this “Bear's Trail” ('Senda del Oso'), a car-free bike path that follows the route of an old miners' railway and takes you past a small reserve where two Asturian brown bears have been raised in captivity in a desperate attempt to increase the native (bear) population.
You can choose from an easy route downstream or a more interesting one on mountain bike. The transfer to the staring point of the route is included but from Santo Adriano, where the bike rental shop is located. We can also visit the Teverga Prehistory Park, placed mainly in natural caves with replicas of famous primitive cave paintings. The tour includes a guide in Spanish but we can hire audio guides in English.
After a delicious breakfast, this short family break comes to an end.
There is something different about this accommodation. It is very welcoming, with a beautiful decoration and transmiting the charms of nature and rural world; the special feeling is also related with the musical sound of the river that run near it. With 7 rooms very carefully decorated, each with a different personality, combining tradition and modernity.
